Discrete speakers
« on: November 02, 2010, 02:41:33 »
Anyone have or know of a possible discrete sound system for a Pagoda?  I have taken a look at the one from Mechatronik and for my particular situation it will not work.  According to Gernold once I install the spal A/C blower there will not be enough room in the kick panel area.  Not sure if going smaller would be the solution.

Currently I have two Jensen's in the back which were installed back in 1980 along with the center speaker up front.  There's a console mounted fader for the front and back speakers which works quite well for what it is.

I want the dash to look the way it is with my Becker Europa II and do not want to use a modern unit.

Any suggestion's, pictures or links are appreciated.

Thanks

I tried some under seat speakers which sounded fine but I couldn't take being goosed anytime a deep note was hit.  Just a heads up so you don't wast your time with that rout!

Hi Hauser,

I have the buds A/C system and fitted four 4" speakers with the front ones in the kick panels which you can only see if you stick your head in the footwells. My interior is black and that does help in hiding the installation though. I was able to fit the drivers side flush but the A/C side needed a 1" proud pod mounted low in the back of the kick panel just above the inner sill. Don't have any pictures unfortunately and the cars in the body shop at present.

How about mounting speakers under the rear parcel shelf, but retain the carpet over the speakers?
You Becker can be connected to your iPod via an aux-cable that could go into the glove compartment. This way everything looks original and such an upgrade is on my long list of priorities...

I happened to stumble on to a shop that does this type of work on older Mercedes.  It is similar to what Mechatronik is doing.

The ashtray holds a remote for the new components which are hidden away under the parcel shelf.  The components, amp, crossover, radioand woofer are bolted to a platform which is secured down with existing holes under the shelf.  Prices range from $2,500 to $5,000 + depending on what you want.  The original radio keeps it's location along with the dash speaker and left functional.

Nice, but expensive - and isn't fiddly and large 10-CD changers a bit out of fashion considering that you can have your entire music library on an iPod half the size of the average mobile phone? Or at least a CD player capable of playing MP3s - you should then be able to put at least 70 songs on one CD...
But the amplifier and speakers sound (no pun intended) like a great idea :-)

I built a box to double as a console arm rest.  I installed 2 opposing 4 inch speakers in it.  I veneered it with the same wood as the consolle and ran the wires under the carpet.  You cannot see the speakers because I mounted the inside the box.  The package works well and I use a becker stereo with no dash speakers.  PM me if you want a picture.  The change is very reversible.

;) I had a similar idea for a subwoofer.
