Sheet Metal Replacement

Hello:

I'm new to the forum.  I have a general question about the purchase of a '70 280.  I am looking at a car that had been restored back in 1985.  Back then the owner noticed rust on the front and rear sheet metal panels.  So he had the car "restored" by replacing the sheet metal all around the car (not the hood, doors or trunk).  My question is this.  How much of a negative impact on the value of the car is there given that most of the metal is not original?  Should I be concerned about anything?

Replacing rusty panels with new ones is a much better operation than merely fixing the rust spots with Bondo etc. If the work was done properly and all panel gaps are nice and even, I see no problem. But it all really comes down to whether you are looking for an original car (they are very rare after 40+ years) or a sound and rust free driver :-)

Thank you.  I would like to get some advice from an expert on what I should pay for this car.  Can you recommend anyone that I could send some detailed pictures to and get an high level perspective on the price range I should consider?

It all depends upon the quality of the repairs. How was the sheetmetal replaced? Was it riveted, glued or welded? If welded, was it butt welded? If butt welded properly then this shouldn't have much impact on the value of the car. You may not have the answers but some restorations are well documented with photographs. Nothing of course can beat a clean  original rust free car in terms of value.

It was very well done and welded.  Not sure what type of weld. The owner documented the work in many pictures.

Upload the photos, so we can see them - not an expert on US prices, but it's easier to tell when you see the car :-)
