if the motor is cool, I have used simple green.

spray on full strength and then rinse.

if needed a nylon brush can help with the greasy areas.

There are many products such as degreasers etc but I once stumbled upon a garage and they use simple washing detergents in powder form because they told me that it's the best to get rid of oil.  I have tried it and it works quite well.  Dissolve some in water, and wipe the engine and then soft rinse!  Just a two cents suggestion...

Good Morning to all,

Would you use Simple green on the firewall padding as well or just mild soap and water?  I want to detail the engine bay as soon as Mother Nature permits!

Hello Joe,

Some mild soap and water should just do fine for the firewall pad. I suggest to treat that original part as gentle as possible.
Dishwasher detergent works best for most places/items on the cars ... ;)

Best,
