Hello Healy,
On the engine stopping, and cold starting..... make sure that the main fuel filter is not dirty. All other tune-up items like timing, dwell, spark plug wires, and spark plugs should be checked. Next you may try to adjust the air screw on the intake up a bit to get the engine to idle a little faster. The fuel mixture screw on the back of the injection pump can also be adjusted if more fuel is needed. There is lots of information on these items here. Ask specific questions if you need to.
For the cold start use a 12 volt test light or voltmeter to check to see if the intake cold start vavle (CSV) is being activated during cold starts. Also check to see if the cold start solenoid on the injection pump is activated anytime the starter is activated. Keep us up to date.
