Hi all,

In view of a possible conversion from auto to manual trans, I was told that the 280 engine is internally balanced and that I didn't need to worry about balancing the flywheel with the krankshaft. This is also what is said in this discussion: http://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=7790.0

On the other hand, a German enthousiast I know and who has a few rebuilds and conversions under his belt tells me it is not so and he had to balance krank and flywheel together on a 280SE. He also tells me the M116 was the first engine to be internally balanced.

So, I'm now a bit confused. I have the M116-117 engines service manual and in section 03-410, a note at the bottom of the page says:

"When installing a new flywheel, the latter need not be balanced again, since the flywheel, the crankshaft and the vibration damper are individually balanced.

Due to installation tolerances, crankshaft and flywheels are combined in three groups. During assembly, pay attention to color code or group code number on crankshaft and flywheel"

I do not have the M130 engine service manual. Could someone who has it verify if it's the same as with the M116-M117 engines?

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

The flywheel on M130 engine should not need to be balanced with the crankshaft. I have changed many over the years with no problem.

There should be no need to balance as an assembly, but if the opportunity arises I always do.
