Total Restore DVD

Hi,

I bought a copy of the Total Restore DVD which arrived the other day. All in all it is a very good DVD, particularly in relation to the engine rebuild, dash rebuild, interior carpets and a few other places.

Areas it completely missed:

1. Steering - Would have been great to see a steering box rebuilt
2. Gear box
3. Chassis - it would have been great to get some good shots and advice re the chassis particularly rust prone areas and major repairs.
4. Fuel system (although showed timing of mechanical FI)
5. Suspension - not standard when you consider the rear suspension particular rebuilding with rubber spacers and getting it right.

It was amazing to see the the engine rebuild didn't require the cylinders bored.

I bought the total restore video about two years ago and as I recall the old pistons were re-used even though some ring lands were worn; they went through a lot of trouble to get these fixed, before being able to fit new rings. And that was when pistons cost about half of what they are today! At today's cost (over $200 for each piston + rings) it makes even more sense to see whether the existing pistons can be re-used and just re-ringed.
I'll have to watch the video again one of these days, it's very entertaining.

Yeah I bought it too and found it very interesting to watch, as is anything 113 related, but it was also very frustrating the way certain areas were totally glossed over !

The engine bits were good, though why he didn't pull the block and tranny out together initially was bizzare. The rest of what was done was shown in good detail except as mentioned the fine tuning of the linkages etc. I suspect though that the rreason for this is that the is not a "113 Total Restoration video" it is a "Total Restoration" video that happens to feature a 113 ! Hence some of the details exclusive to our cars were not dwelled upon. Unfortunately it is THESE dtails that interest us.

I know enough about engine rebuilds and didn't learn anything new there. I was more interested in the bodywork end and learned nothing here either as nothing was shown !

I was a bit dissapointed with it to be honest but I'm glad I bought it !

Ben,

Did you love the sound track? And the English guy who keeps popping up?

The most annoying part was the 40 minutes donated to Chroming.. who cares!!! You send the part off and they Chrome it! I'm not going to set up an electroplating centre in my backyard.

Yeah I think the chroming part should've been a one liner !

The English guy measuring his nails with a vernier ??

Actually I was also annoyed by the fact that they measured everything in Imperial units when the whole car is metric !!

Now that you mention it, the imperial thing drove me nuts. It's the reason spaceships blast into Mars at 7,000 KILOMETRES per hour instead of landing softly!!! Why, when Mercedes, like the rest of the world (except the English of course but that it changing slowly), use metric, convert to an outdated, useless, stupid thing like imperial???
