Installing an original steering wheel
« on: February 06, 2009, 00:10:16 »
We're the second owner of our car, and the original owner installed a very nice Nardi wood wheel "back in the day". I like it, but I'm thinking of going back to the original steering wheel (which the original owner lost over the years). Do you have any advice on where I might find the required parts ( preferably used but in very good condition)? The car is a US delivery 1969 280SL, Silver with black interior. The shift knob is black, so I'm guessing the wheel would be black with the satin finish horn ring.

Thanks,

Nick, welcome to the group and many happy Pagoda days!
You should try to find a Type III steering wheel - see the first post in this topic: http://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=6502.0
Fortunately, black steering wheels and black horn pads are usually a lot cheaper than ivory ones.
There is one on eBay that looks decent (item nr. 110347686912) - but ask the sell whether it has the matte ring, it is difficult to judge from the picture.
The usual applies, I am not the seller and don't know him/her.

Look it  up in ebay and be patient.  Also, Millers, Buds, Mercedes Classic Center will probably have it new.  The wheel only will probably cost $450.

Nardi worth a small fortune. Do not "swap" for original wheel.

I purchased my 70 280 sl with a nardi steering wheel, the first thing I wanted to do was to search for an original, but the few times I drove it ( pre winter storage ) I come to like the feel of the Nardi. Still undecided, but will search for original , but not as hard.

Hello,

The same Mercedes steering wheel was used on many sedans of the era. Finding a used one without cracks is difficult.
