Steering Idler Arm Heat shield
« on: March 13, 2011, 18:01:10 »
Fellow members,

A while ago another member was looking for a heat shield for the steering idler arm for his pagoda and I asked if someone could perhaps post some photos of what this shield looks like.
Well, Eric (tel76) has graciously provided some photos and I have selected a few. Thank you again Eric.

I am also hoping to start a healthy debate about the finer details surrounding the heat shields and their use in our cars.

Based on the info that I have, the original part number was A111 463 00 90 and was the same as was used in the fintails.
This part number has been superseded to A113 463 00 90 and was used on 230SL's from chassis number 042 000903 onwards.

A113 463 00 90 seems to have been (although the EPC still refers to the older number A111 463 00 90) used in 280SL's up to chassis number 044 000018 (including 000091 and 000108).

From chassis number 044 000019 (except 000091 and 000108) the part number changed to A108 463 00 90 for LHD cars and A108 463 04 10 for RHD cars.

It would be interesting to note the differences, if any, between the different part numbers.

Just a couple of photos more to show the heat shield mounted.

Hi, Jaco,

I had a look at the parts and have to disagree - a little bit...

The 108 463 0410 is not a protective plate for RHD but an intermediate steering arm for RHD.
For a RHD protective plate, one would expect the part # to be xxx 463 0190, but I suspect one is not used because the exhaust on RHD cars passes from under the subframe and is not as near to the steering idler as on LHD cars. It would be interesting to see if anyone with a RHD car has this plate.

Also, It seems to me that 108 460 0090 supercedes 113 460 0090 and is still applicable for Chassis upto 044 000018 (+ exceptions)

You are correct Naj, I double checked the numbers again and it seems that I have made a small mistake.
Thanks for pointing it out.
