230SL decals

Hello:
I have just completed a detailing of my engine bay in our 1965 230SL. I would like to add the factory warning decals. Can someone advise on which are required and a possible source. Much Thanks BBAY1

There are several sources, I believe Bob Geco on this board sells them, as well as some of the regular parts suppliers. I´ve seen them offered on Ebay. The vendor might also supply instructions on where to mount them.

Nice work! My only suggestion is that you should swap out those blue Bosch ignition wires. My experience is that those wires don't last long — plus they stand out like a sore thumb in an otherwise very nice engine bay.

Another detail you might want to consider is correct style hose clamps.  Pete Lesler, "W113SL" on this forum, sells complete sets and is quite experienced in the production details of these cars.  You can e-mail him by finding him in the Members list and clicking on his user ID.

Good catch on the clamps, the cotter style ones are in place, but the other hose clamps should be "Norma" clamps. Pete can help with this. Also there should be three small bumpers on the lip/ridge just above the insulation pad. I think there was a thread on this a while back, and some suggestions as to where you can find them. Go to the search feature, and type in "Hood bumper", and there is a thread that details, part number, length, photos, etc.

What engine have you got in it? The valve cover (oil filler) looks like from a late 280.
Also, I think the HT leads should be routed under the fuel lines - but I could be wrong

(Let's call the Norma clamps what they are: the modern equivalent to the original Gemi clamps. They are not what came on the car, but are the closest things available today.)

My 230SL oil filler cap does not look like that one, but I never checked to find out what was the original cap.  Mine is flat on top and has finger grip indents all around it.

Regarding the clamps, some of the ones I removed from my car when replacing the old coolant lines said Gemi on them.  This was two years ago and at the time I didn't know that this brand/style was no longer available.  It's amazing how long some things stay in place on particular examples of these cars.

I like the older style oil caps (the one Rodd refers to, with the finger grips all around - the valve cover for these is threaded and the fit is very nice - basically the cap fits in like a 'bolt' - in order to remove it, you have to turn it several revolutions). The older ones are a bajonet fitting like the one in BBAy's photo and can actually be difficult to remove. Before I replaced mine with the older style I had a bajonet-style and it leaked some oil.

You are correct Naj. According to Chilton's Mercedes Benz 1959-70 Repair & Tune-up Guide on page 57 "make sure that the spark plug wires go underneath the fuel injection tubes".

I will throw in a picture of my engine bay as well. I have now learned that the blue wires should go + rerouted under the fuel tubes. New pipe (now replaced by rubber) between the cold start thermostat and the manifoil. Wrong color on tubes and relays. Wrong clamps and so on…. Plenty to do in the future.

OK, let's try again. I spoke with Bob ref decals. Unfortunately he does not have them for the 230SL. I do have photos of French fuse box insert and French "don't lower the top when wet" sticker if someone needs them. The E-Bay source is a possibility though slow delivery seems a problem per feedback. I will continue the search. Thanks all for the originality tips.

Hi Cees,
The large drum is the VDO cruice control actuator. The control cable goes across to the manifoil were it is hooked up to the linkage. It is also vacum connected to the manifoil. The speed signal is derived from the gearbox via the cable going to the odometer/speedometer (or whatever it is called in english). You can see the conection on the cable close to the torpedo wall. The control switches are under the A/C unit with on/off, set/accelerate/decelerate.
