Where to measure head?
« on: March 31, 2011, 09:35:53 »
Hello.
Soon the head will go off. I'm curious if the head is decked before.
Can anyone tell me where to measure the head?
And what the size is of an undecked head.
It's a 130.980 engine.
Thanks for any input.
Rini.

Hello Rini,

The stock head is a uniform thickness of 85mm.   Minimum thickness is 84mm.  Measure the head at three or four locations along its lenght for thickness. Typically the front and back end of the head will be where the most material is removed when the head is warped and then "cut".

Use a good accurate caliper or micrometer to measure thickness. Make sure all measurement surfaces are good and clean.

Is it correct that there are thicker gaskets for heads that are cut a few times?

Hello Eminent,

I have heard of these thicker gaskets for other makes of cars, but have never heard of them for Mercedes.

Ok.
I thought so because this partnumber, A1300165520, is a head gasket and in Mercedes EPC there is the following note with that gasket "standard and up to repair size 1".
A1300165620 also a head gasket with the note "repair size 2".
Don't know what they mean by that.
Anyhow, thanks for your answers.

Interesting, it may be worth a call to The Classic Center to find out.

Well. I think i'm often at the dealer to order parts the next few weeks. See if they know what that means. You'll hear from me.

Hello Rini,

The different head gaskets that you have found on the EPC refer not to the thickness of the gasket, but rather to the diameter of the piston.

In other words, if you had the engine rebored the accommodate the next repair size piston, then you would use the appropriate head gasket to match.

As far as I know, Mercedes does not have different thickness gaskets to accommodate an over-milled head.
