Hello,

Since two weeks I have a strange noise hearing from the front of the engine. Concerning a 230 SL automatic from 1967.

When?
Only when the car is hot. With the gear (automatic) shifted in (no mather front or rear), and braking. Also only using the handbrake.

Noise?
It's a light metal noise as if two metals hitting each other slightly coming from the front around the fan. But the fan is not hitting something.

I discovered that the crankshaft vibration damper is worn and must me replaced. This will be done next Monday as well as the right engine mount. But I am not sure the noise is coming from these two problems.
Is someone here well known with this problem of can someone help me with hints?

I have a similar noise... Sometimes it dissapears when I depress the clutch and so I thought it was gearbox related but like you im sure it comes from the front of the engine.
It sounds like sometime metallic is loose like an exhuast bracket or similar.

Be interested to see what you find.

Well, the noise is gone (at least for now)  :)

As I wrote before, my crankshaft vibration damper was worn (see photos) . On the first photo I press the two metal pieces to eachother. You can try this while the damper is on the car. On a good damper this should be solid (not to be pressed). On the second photo you can see the space between the plates.

The damper has been replaced today. Also my engine mount (RHS) has been replaced and the noise is gone  :). I hope the problem is really solved. I would say: check these two parts and replace them if they are worn (I found a second hand damper in good condition for € 150,- (new € 540,-) ...
