280 SL Fuel Injection Pump

Dear Friends,

I have recently started a 1969 280SL restoration project and I have faced some issues with its fuel injection pump. The car was not running properly and smoothly on low revs and as a result I decided to dismantle it and send to a German specialist to check it. His reply was a crazy amount of money for repairing it and he suggested as an alternative solution the purchase of a very expensive rebuilt unit.
Therefore, I am trying to discover possible other ways of getting it done...

Do you happen to know a reliable pump specialist or someone selling such a product?

How much is the high priced rebuilt unit?

According to the SLS website, a rebuild by Bosch these days will cost EUR 3.200, or close to US$ 5 thousand. The US prices will likely be lower, until prices will start to even out? It is worth noting that having a rebuild done in the US will add import duties and VAT upon its return to Europe for the cost of the rebuild.

So have the U.S. pump rebuilder glue a Casio to the side of it and ship it back as a $40 desk clock.

Check out the rebuilders here in the US.  The other alternative is to find a good used injection pump.

Thanks for your replies. The price I was asked to pay for an excellent rebuilt one was about 3K Euros. This is why I am trying to find alternatives in the US market, as the currency rate makes such a solution more affordable. I will contact the shops listed above, but if you have any more information on US rebuilders and Mercedes vintage parts sellers, please let me know!

There are alternatives. You could speak to some companies that work with diesel engines (truck companies) and ask what they'd charge. I got a chap in Holland to rebuild my pump (sounds a bit fancy for what he did, I think - he fixed it when it was broken) and that cost about 500 euros.

He also checked and cleaned the injectors for that price.

Pacific Fuel Injection, 153 Utah Ave. So., San Francisco, CA 94080. Ph.# 650-588 -8880.  Thay do not have a web site. They do excellent work on the Bosch F/I for the W113.  Don't know current cost, but several years ago it cost about $972.  Gernold at SL Tech uses them.

Diesel places can't fix these pumps and most won't even look at them. The pump may look the same but they're different in many ways. A Bosch pump builder would be able to get parts for them but they would need the test plan and certain special tools to do the work. That's when they usually loose interest.
