Heater lever lights

My '71 280sl heater lever lights come on with the ignition key switch.  All of the rest of the dash lights come on with the headlight switch.  Is this normal or do I have yet another wiring problem to trace?  I guess either way it annoys me that these lights are on during daylight.

In that corner of the dash there are several two pronged plugs that would reach the heater controll illumination plug. My guess would be; the plug for the cigarette lighter and the plug for dash illumination on the heater levers have been switched.

That never occurred to me.  That sure would explain why the lighter connection doesn't work.  I'll have to plug power in to the lighter and turn on the lights!
