The generally accepted numbers for the 250 are 5196 cars, 17 in 1966, 5177 in 1967 and 2 in 1968.

1968 250 SL Production

US-spec: 488
Non-US-spec: 2

(Source: "Overview: 230/250/280 SL" in "SL Market Letter" that cites "US Marketing data" and "worldwide production")

I lookrd on the "other" Pagoda site and this user quotes an Engelen Book...I will try to paste his post...here goes...

When Gunter Engelen wrote the "Mercedes Benz 190 SL - 280 SL Vom Barock zur Pagode" he was allowed access to the MB archives and documents. His material is considered reliable. According to Engelen, the last 250 SL was built in November 1967. The first 250 SL was built 2 Dec 66... about thirty 250's were made in 1966.
As far as the cut-over to the 280 SL, there was an overlap when MB made a few 280's while the 250 was still coming down the line. This was at the end of 1967 when MB made about 50 280 Sl's.
Here's a little auto trivia from Engelen: What was the only year in which MB produced all three 113 car models? Answer: 1967. The last 230 Sl was made 05 January 67, 250's were made all during 1967, and the first few 280's were made beginning 07 December 1967. No 250 SL's were made in Calendar Year 1968.
Caution: while Engelen may be reliable, no one can say for sure that he's always correct, and keep in mind the point of the previous message about Model Year especially in North America where build date and the date on the registration and the car data plate model year are often quite different. The Engelin dates above are all Calendar Year dates.

Too bad the Engelen book is not available in English, it is a great resource

For the USA, the 1968 Model Year started with registration date of September 1, 1967 and a 250SL serial number of 113 043 ... 002982. I.e., the US version 250SLs within serial number range ...002982 to 005196 are all 1968 Model Year, produced in 1967 calender year. The copy of the official DaimlerBenz production records that I have does not show any 250SL produced in 1968, but lists serial 005196 as produced in December 1967.

So 2 and 488 are way different. Just thought I'd ask. :)

Many consider[falsely] any 250sl after the Aug production change to be a '68
and anything up to then to be a '67..
Also known as "Early" 250sl and "Late" 250sl...
My preference is Early Euro [ more in tune with the 230sl series],
whereas , the late  [ production change models ] are more simular to the 280.....

I actually thought the break point between the "last" of the EARLY 250SLs and the "first" of the LATE 250 SLs was VIN No 2979 / 2980.

It seems to be the number used by companies when supplying parts, and was also quoted frequently on the Yahoo site.

Bob, that probably means that 2980 and 2981 were new versions, but not US versions.
