I have a 230 manual with a somewhat leaky transmission, I think from the front rather than the back end. I'm reluctant to undertake any major mechanical work to address the issue of a relatively small leak; small but messy enough to make it worth thinking about.
I use Castrol ATF DIII. It's a reddish oil, and quite thin at cold (for those in the UK, it's a white bottle, red label, with a pic of some gears on it). I've tried putting in a seal conditioner to help address the leak, but to no noticeable result. I lose about about 100 ml every few months.
I wondered if anyone could recommend an ATF that they use that might be slightly less thin than some of the synthetics that are out there at present, or which may help swell the seals. Particularly, I'd be interested in anything that was mineral rather than synthetic, as in my simple mind (complete and utter lack of knowledge about oil) a mineral oil might be slightly thicker than a synthetic product.
