Engine ID
« on: September 15, 2011, 18:20:34 »
I am a new member. I own a 1964 230SL.  I believe my engine is not a 230Sl engine but an engine form a different car.  On the side of the engine I can read on one line 8-9.5 E. Just below it,  it reads 130-106 00 01. just down form this it reads in big numbers   280.  Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Hello BNeville

First of all, welcome to the group! And it is great that you became a full member straight away.

As to your question, the numbers that you have posted are not of the engine, but the cylinder head. There is an excellent chart on what these numbers mean in the technical manual. That said, the numbers do indicate that you have a 280 engine in there so your original engine was replaced at some point.

Have a look at that section of the technical manual, as it explains all about where to find the actual engine number, how to interpret it etc.

I also have a 1964 230SL and the engine number starts with 127 981 which is an M127 engine.
You have a 280SL M130 engine which is more powerful. There are quite a few 230 with transplanted 280 engines out there, including Stirling Moss'es I think.
