Alternator light stays on
« on: September 14, 2011, 01:29:31 »
Hi all you electrical experts.
The alternator light on my 230SL starting flickering almost 2 weeks ago. This started after I blew the #2 fuse and replaced it. Now the alternator light stays on all the time. Is it obvious that the alternator is dead? The car starts fine and runs like her usual self. Two 20-minute drives the other night and nary a problem and the headlights blazing away. I checked the battery with my multi-meter and the engine off, and it gives 12V. With the engine running, the reading across the battery gives a little more than 12V but not the 14.2V that I read is required. Even with the headlights, heater fan and wipers going, it still reads between 12V and 13V.

How serious is this? What else could it be, if the alternator has kept the battery charged these past few days?

Thanks for suggestions.
