Torque settings?
« on: May 24, 2004, 22:33:56 »
Why does the BBB not tell me the correct torque to turn in all the nuts and bolts I've had to remove and reinstall?  I've replaced the water pump and water pump housing gasket this evening. No Torque settins for any of the bots were mentioned in the BBB, the Haynes Owners Workshop Manual, nor the Chilton Repair and Tuneup guide.

I'm the kind of guy that overtightens everything. I NEED torque settings for every nut and bolt.  Where do I get this information? It MUST exist!

There is a small (5" by 4") technical reference manual that gives torque specs for most of the critical fasteners.  Purchase the version for the year of your car at the dealer or the Classic Center.

Here is one on ebay for the 1971 model year:

Excellent. Perhaps I'll bid on this very one.  but, you know, I *HATE* eBay.  I always get outbid in like the last 30 seconds, and it really PISSES me off!

Anyway, in the meantime, until I get a copy of this book, is it possible for someone to tell me the correct torque spec for the 6 hex head bolts that fasten the vibration damper and power steering pulley to the harmonic balancer/crank-shaft?

I have it on, but haven't torqued it. The bolt heads are allen key are are startingt to tear thin. I'll stop now, and wait for someone with the spec - so I don't over/under tighten.

Thanx, all!

William,

The torque for the Crankshaft Damper Socket Screws is listed in the Haynes Manual at 25 lb f ft / 35 Nm.

Thanx, Per.  Hummm, in the Haynes manual, ey? The Owners Workshop, or a different repair manual.  I really did read and search the Owners Workshop.  Can you tell me where in the Haynes manual it is, so I have some reference?
Thanx again.  Only 25 LBs, ey?  I was WAY overtightening them last time I installed them (several days ago).  That's why I *NEED* torque settings for everything!

The torque settings are generally in the front (first one or two pages) of every chapter in the Haynes manual, and I have typically found most of the ones needed there.

In the BBB covering cars manufactured from 1966-1973, torque specs are on page 00-0/16.  Multiply mkp by 7.2 to get lb-ft.

I found the short section in the BBB for 68-71 cars in job 00, but it covered only a few - important - things like head bolts, etc. Nothing describing the 6 hex-head bolts holding the vib-damper on.

Haynes 1968-1972 manual Chapter 1/Engine page 18. There may be other versions of the manual that maybe not list the torque.

Sure enough. There it is, in black and white, on page 18, just like Per said:
Crankshaft damper socket screws ... ... ... ... ... ... ... 25    35

Thanx, Per.  Damper and everything is back on the car. I attempt to turn the key tomorrow.  Wish me luck!   I hope I don't need it!
