Oil line?
«
on:
October 02, 2011, 17:20:09 »
I found what is apparently an oil line that is connected on one end and hanging on the other. The line is connected to a banjo fitting just behind the crank pulley at about the one o'clock position. Where does the other end of this line fit?
Thanks,
Joe

Hi, Joe,
If you mean this one, it goes to the back of the F I Pump.

I think that woud be the line that goes into the trunk to vent the over flow tank on the fuel tank.
Fumes from the fuel tank are vented directly into the engine where they are drawn into the manifold through the vent line and hose going to the throttle valve.

To clarify, the banjo bolt is on the front of the block, just behind the crank pulley. The pipe is black metal and there is a short bit of rubber hose attached to the open end with a clamp. This obviously is meant to attach to another metal pipe (somewhere).
I also should have mentioned that the engine is a 280SL engine.

Is your power steering working, its not the oil line from the bottom of the power steering reservoir?

Nooooo! It's the fuel tank venting line on a late 280SL.

That makes sense, Dr. So when a 280 engine was put into the 230 by a DPO, it was just left hanging, venting to air. That would explain the absense of a place to attach the loose end.
Now, what, if anything, should I do about it?
Thanks,
Joe

You can plug it or remove the fitting at the front of the block and get a screw in cap that's used in that application.
