Tires again

I went to our local Discount Tire Co., looking for the 185R14 Michelin that everyone says they have put on their cars, but evidently this is not available. Which whitewall Michelin has anyone Recently purchased ? I would like to stick with the stock size if possible. The only Michelin I have found is the Symetry, which is a SR rated tire that looks like it came off my uncle's pontiac.

Try looking at the Tire Rack website, at http://www.tirerack.com
They provide alot of information regarding all types of tire. You can decide what charactoristics are most important to you and research on what best fits your needs.
I am an originality freak, but the tires are one area in which function wins out over form.

I tried the tire rack, also Discount Tire (which is the owner of Tire Rack?), and they have no tires in that size, also the MXV is no longer available. Has anyone recently purchased a 185-14

Is this a concourse show car?  Why do you only want the original "185HR14" I have size?  If everything on the car is "as original", then I guess I can understand it.  Just asking, not judging.

I have Michelin Symmetry whitewalls, I think they are size 195/75r14.  Good for daily driving, but not good for autocrossing!

Michelin does produce the original-spec tire again, in a 'classic line'. They are relatively expensive, and not available through the regular Michelin outlets, but, rather, through specialized classic tire suppliers. Not sure about which that would be in the US, but in Europe, there is a listing available, Albert from Spain has that list and has published it on this site I am pretty sure. For the US, you might try asking the Michelin importer/wholesale distributor.

I've got a set of Perelli P77 P195/75R14 white wall sneakers wrapped around my '71 280 SL. They look sharp, and stick like glue - even in wet weather! I'd recommend them if you're going to spend $$$!

You will find the recommended tire for a 250 SL (in the original size 185HR14), which is the same for 230 and 280's Pagodas. You will read "XAS" type, but actually is the tubeless "MXV-P" tire, which is an evolution for the XAS. You will find it here:

I think they are only blackwall. I have them on my car since 1999, and I'm very satisfied with the result, on both ways: aesthetic (they have the protuding rub strip, which looks very "classic") and handling.

In case anyone in North America is looking for an original style 185R14 Phoenix tire with the curb strip, it is listed in the 2004 Coker catalog, page 25: 185R14 rated H with 3/4 inch whitewall, $165 each. www.coker.com 800 251-6336

Coker is a retailer/reseller and I doubt Pheonix is still a tire company.  Do you know who actually makes this tire in the Coker catalog?  I wonder what it's quality is like?

Phoenix AG is alive in Hamburg, Germany but no longer makes tires. I'm not sure who makes them.

I don't know about the quality of the Coker Phoenix tires but the tires are rated "H". I think that's 130 mph. I believe they had to be tested to get that rating.

Buyers should ask Coker for specifics. I'm not recommending the tires, just pointing out a source for those who want a curb strip tire.
