4-speed manual trans question
« on: January 08, 2006, 22:14:31 »
Can someone help with this question?

The data book indicates that the input shaft tube diameter (or something like that) was changed on the G72 4-speed when the diaphram clutch was introduced (on the 280 SL, I think).  Does anyone know the diameter of the input shaft tube for the diaphram clutch type G72?  Or some other way to positively identify the correct transmission?

Thanks in advance!

GD,
The last known part # for this housing that I can find is 108 260 0021 but seems to be NLA. Earlier housings are different parts numbers as you suspect.
If it helps, the casting number on my 280SL gearbox tube housing is: 198 281 1001
Now tell us what you've done

Hi Naj,

Thanks for the info on the casting number, I'll see if that helps.  You don't by chance have your gearbox sitting in front of you, do you?  Any chance you can measure the input shaft tube outside diameter?

I haven't done anything yet, actually.  I want to overhaul my gearbox, but that would mean probably 6-8 weeks with the car out of service, so I'd like to get another gearbox so I can keep the car moving.

Sounds like the 230 SL is coming back together nicely, I'm glad there wasn't more damaage.  Did you ever figure out what all those bits and pieces were?

Thankfully, the box is back in the car.
I do have the old release bearing somewhere. I'll look for it at the weekend and have a measure up.
Yes thanks, the 230 engine is running well. Just needs to put the hood etc. back so I can take it home. I believe the bits were one of the two spacers from the top left chain idler sprocket (wonder why they are not used on the 129 and 130 engines  :?:  [:(!])

Naj.......good to here you are up and running again!

I have started my bodywork project, the car is in a couple of hundred parts in my warehouse, awaiting the delivery of all the body panels and the transporter truck !

Anyway I have a spare 4 speed transmission, I promised Naj I would take it out and get the relevant info.....sorry, but I could do it this weekend if it helps at all !

Regards,
Ben in Ireland.

Hello Naj, and thank you very much!  That should be the info I need.

Ben, your trans input shaft diameter should be 1.5 mm different, larger I think(?).

Thanks again!

Naj,

Thanks again, that goes along with what the data book says.  Early clutch type (coil springs) gets the 35.5 mm shaft, later diaphragm clutch gets 34 mm.  Of course the book doesn't give the sizes, just says they differ by 1.5 mm.

Now I must set about obtaining an extra gearbox, I must be the only one who doesn't have one :D !
