What is the ultimate expression?
« on: May 30, 2004, 05:48:03 »
Someday I want to build a car and would like to power it with a mercedes 6 cylinder with Bosch mechanical injection and I am wondering what the highest performance version of thie engine would be? (I will have to exclude the 300SL Gullwing/roadster for cost reasons)
I would just like to know in case someday i Trip over one somewhere.

For the original W113 chassis engines I would imagine the 280 (M130) variety with the euro camshaft and the appropriate FI pump should have the most oomph. There are various things that can be done to increase the output, like maximum overbore (as is the case with my engine), balanced components, etc. There have been a number of discussion on this topic on the various W113 sites in the past. As for other possibly stronger period 6-cylinder engines, I wouldn't know.

You simply say "Mercedes 6 cylinder".  If you're not worried about "period correctness", then I would have to suggest the 3.6 liter AMG engine used in the C36 (and E36 in Europe) in the middle to late 1990's.  You also say "build a car", so I guess you're not limiting this to the W113 chassis?

I was talking to bob hatch in massachusetts (well known restorer) and he is working on a pagoda in which he is putting a 70-71 280se-3.5 v-8 in. He says it is a perfect mounting fit. He may put the rear and front end also as well as tranny.

He should have it complete by end of summer. I will be in contact with him and will see if he will do a write up or any other suggestions from others.

I am actually toying with the idea of scratch building a loose replica of a W-196. I really like the sound, feel and performance of my 1970 280SL but was wondering if there was a higher performance version of this engine.
