« on: January 11, 2012, 03:36:55 »
Can anyone give me the correct part number for the screw on Oil Filler Cap Seal on the early 280 engine rocker cover.

Thanks

Is this the large round cap that screws in?
I have used two in the past. One I bought from SLS (Germany) that was rubber and one that I bought from the Classis Center that is a thicker cork (#180 997 02 40). The rubber tended to stick to the valve cover eventhough I always put an oil film on it before I screwed it down. I just put the cork on so I don't have any feedback from it yet.

Hi Wallace,

Its this one.  MB Dealer here wanted a part number as the last one he got did not fit. Is that the MB part number you quoted?

Hi, Garry,

You have to be careful with the part # 180 997 0240.
MB have superceded that # to 000 010 1285 which is the filler cap and seal ring for the later valve cover with bayonet type cap.

I had to get these from SLS last time.

Thanks Naj and Wallace, Think I will pass the MB Dealer and go to SLS or CC.

Naj is right about the 180 997 02 40 number which is a rubber seal and is not available from MB. What is being offered instead is #191 997 00 40 which is a cork seal which does fit that cap you show because I have it on mine now. The cork is about twice as thick as the rubber seal.

SLS may still have the rubber one. If you have the old one, you can use it as a pattern and get material in a sheet form and cut your own. Here is a link to one supplier:  http://www.mcmaster.com/#rubber/=frji2p   I would recommend the 70 shore A hardness ultra strength nitrile and select the thickness that you need.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Wallace,

It got lost in the peening process and as an interim I cut out a piece from an old tyre tube that is sealing it as an interim but would like to get the correct one. Thickness doesnt matter as it is a screw cap.

Just called the local MB dealer with the second part number and they can get it so ordered.

Thanks for help
