A major milestone, the 2000 Mile Mark
« on: January 30, 2012, 00:08:19 »
Beautiful day here today so we took our SL out for a jaunt and passed the 2000 mile mark since getting it back on the road 16 months ago after her 25+ year "hibernation". I remember taking the wheel for the 1st time as I drove away from the Ernie's shop back in Sept '10 thinking "I hope it can make the 30 mile trip home to my garage". Well, it made it home and then some. I never could have imagined what great fun we would have driving our old friend again. Really incredible!

I bought my car in the fall of 2008.  It was a California garage find of a 1980s slumber with just 56298 miles on it.  I now have over 61000 miles on it and have enjoyed 3 summers with it.  It has been a great ride...

Can't beat those California cars:-) Mine has spent it's whole life here and has never driven on salted roads. It was in the snow once in Utah's Bryce Canyon but it got a good steam cleaning when it got home. Always in a garage or covered when I drove it to work everyday helped too. Glad your 230 has found a good home. Enjoy.

Hey John, congrats on your milestone! As somebody who remembers when you first joined here, I witnessed your ever-increasing confidence and your special re-connection with your car. What a joy to see such a nice example get taken out and driven by somebody who appreciates it. Keep up the good work!

Speaking of miles driven, just for comparison, my official total for the calendar year 2011 was 2330 Kms or about 1447 miles. The previous year (2010) was 2387 Kms or 1483 miles. Before that, 2820 Kms or 1752 miles.... Pretty consistent I'd say. And not too far off your numbers for 16 months. Being in similar climates with similar semi-rural surroundings and nice back roads helps!

Cheers

Thanks James. You are so right, we live in the perfect area for these cars. The roads were made for them. Years ago, when we lived in the LA area, it was always a challenge to drive the car but we had some favorite places like the hills behind Malibu, the Palos Verdes Peninsula and nothing used to beat the drive up the coast to Santa Barbara, my old hometown. We were down that way a couple of weeks ago and just too many cars and traffic now. I guess I am getting old (or just too used to the country life:-)
