Help for tidy up on wire at back of injector pump
« on: February 16, 2012, 08:21:00 »
Hi, have been grateful for the help I have had on the battery cable layout, so thought I would ask how the wiring should look at the back of the injector pump.  Have attached a photo to show wht I have got now.  The rubber shroud that normally covers the connection, on the back of the injector pump looks genuine? but not on, but what about the huge diameter plastic sleeve that is floating in the breeze?  Why is it such a big diameter?  It might be right because the end of the rubber shroud is about that size, but why is it so big for one small wire.  can someone plse post a pic of how this should look plse?

Hi, Rutger,

The rubber boot looks correct for the solenoid at the rear of the pump but can be a challenge to put on when the rubber is old and has got hard. The plastic sleeve seems to be foreign....

The rubber boot looks like the cover for the Thermo Time Switch. The large rubber sleeve almost looks like the spark plug wire collector near the distributor on these engines.

Hi, thanks for both those replies, If the rubber boot is right why is it so big on the input end, there is only a single wire  running through it?  Would be good to get a photo of how it should look if someone has got the time.

Your loom does not look original it looks to be black nylon webbing over the cables with heatshrink over that
in places. These are much more modern wiring methods.

My W111 does not have any rubber boots for my (2) solenoids. Not that it is the rule, but a rubber boot would have to have a very large opening (1"?) to go over the plastic end on the solenoid. That boot looks like the one on the starter pole. I just took my thermoswitch boot off this weekend and it is different than the one in the picture. The thermoswitch boot looks more like a smoking pipe and has a small entrance for the wires.

As far as the plastic braid on the wiring harness; my W111 uses it in various places and the starting solenoid wire has that braid going right up to the harness junction. The fuel shut off solenoid uses a plastic sleeve however. I am confident this is original as it is begining to degrade a bit.

Hi, Rutger,
I agree with Wallace. The braided insulation is seen on many engines where the wiring ends up on the engine such as the TTS and Pump solenoid branch and sometimes also on the CSS and cold start valve branches of the harness.

Both my 230 SL and 280 SL have this rubber boot on the FIP solenoid. The part# on the boot on your picture is visible but not legible. Perhaps you could read it for us and post it?

I believe the boot on the starter main wire is a smaller size.

Great picture Naj!

Rubber boots do have a tendency to crack and fall off and then unless you are the original owner, you never knew you had them. Hopefully Rutger will post that number because I will get two to put on my solenoids. Is the opening for the wires on that boot as large as on Rutger's picture?

I wonder if any of the original owner Pagoda owners have these boots on their US cars. Do you have boots on both solenoids when equipped?

Both, the 230SL and the 280SL did not have any boots on the IP when I got them.

Hi all, I have got the number off the rubber boot, hard to read but I get 1115460035.  One end does look like it is made to fit the end of the injector pump, it is only the other end that is weird.  This car was originally odered from and picked in Fellbach, Stuttgart.  I alsdo have the proper boot for the wire to the  temperature gauge and it is correct, not the same as this one.

According to the EPC, #111 546 00 35 is a boot that is right next to the positive cable on both W111 and W113 cars. These are North American versions and maybe the Euro versions are differenet. When I ordered a boot for my positive battery cable from the California Classic Center, # 116 546 01 35 what they sent me. So I am confused ??? Maybe I will get the #111 546 0035 and see what it looks like. I do have a 111 after all.

Ahhhh!  yes it would fit a battery clamp and that explains the big diameter at the other end. No wonder I could never get it to sit on the end of the injector pump.  I will take it off and the big bit of shrink sleeve

Many Thanks
