There are some places on our cars where a plain wire retaining ring aka snap ring aka split ring is used to hold something in place. I needed one because I bought a used glove box lock and the ring that holds the tumbler assembly in the barrel was missing. There are plenty of rings with ears on them that are used with snap ring pliers, but I couldnn't find a plain wire one which is the only kind that would fit.
So I used the wire ring from a key tag to make one. Looking at the family collection of key tags I noticed quite a variety of wire sizes. So I picked one that looked the right size, cut a piece out of it, smushed it in a vise to the right diameter and poked it into the lock assembly with a screwdriver.
