051 disti with 027 points?
« on: March 29, 2012, 19:03:26 »
I have an 051 disti and 027 points which are the correct points according to the tech manual.  However the disti has a fixed hinge post for the points, yet the 027 points have an integral hinge post so they won't work together.  Any ideas what's going on?

Hello Peter,

I have an -051 distributor, and yes, it has a fixed pin on the breaker plate.  The proper points slip over this pin; the center axis of the spring part of the points is what slips over the pin.

OK, that suggests that either I don't have 027 points in the 027 box, or that 027 points are not actually the correct part and we'll have a bug to correct in the tech manual once I get this sorted out...

If anyone knows which points should go with an 051 disti, please chime in...

Peter, I call the pin on the distributor breaker plate the pivot pin, since the points pivot on it.  When my first mechanic installed a Crane XR700, he pulled off that pin! That rendered the distributor impossible to accomodate points ever again, until Mike Webster machined and swaged a new pin for me.

I could look up the part numbers but basically the different sets of points used in our distributors fall into three visual types.

Early points with vaccum advance have a rectangular hole where the two plastic parts fit together. The later vacuum retard set of pints has a round hole where the two parts fit together.

The late CD ignition set is stamped together so that the point set is all one part. This set has a pin that fits into a hole on the point plate. If I remember correctly, the 061 has a round hole where the distributor wire fits through the housing and the 062 has a square fitting. Either uses the same set of points.

Peter, isn't the "hinge post" on your point set an open-ended cylinder, and won't that fit over the brass post in the 051?  At least, Bosch did a lot of them that way.     Denny

I think I've seen points like you describe, but the ones I got have a solid pin.

I've re-ordered the 007 points which I think are correct.

All these things happen overnight...

First I was going to say, consult Dr. Benz, or Glenn Ring who know these distributors.

Second thing I was going to say is my package of "sealed" points does have an 007 on it...but that is part of many other numbers so I think you are on to something.

When in doubt on distributor stuff, Dan Caron can answer these questions in his sleep.  He can probably supply the parts, too.

So far it would appear that at least in the US Bosch has two part numbering systems.  The guy at my local parts shop kept talking about long numbers and short numbers, and I had no idea what he was talking about - perhaps until now.

There are two short numbers out there, 01027 and 01007.  Silly me thought these were short hand versions of the 027 and 007 long numbers, but it would appear to just be a crazy coincidence that these short numbers and long numbers end in the same last three digits as valid long number points for our cars.  If I remember my probability correctly, that's a 1/10,000 chance.

The box that the points came in is labeled (Bosch box and label):

01027
F00E140301

Googling "F00E140301" doesn't yield a single hit.  Not one.  When's the last time you saw THAT happen?
