How do I loosen the power steering pump?
« on: June 20, 2012, 17:16:33 »
I must be stupid.......please do not agree so fast, I feel bad enough..... I only see one bolt on the top front of the pump. i also see what appears to be a tightening nut on the bottom right of the pump. I have loosened both but cannot get the pump to move in order to get the belt off. I am afraid to use too much force as I do not want to break anything. Is there another bolt that I do not see? This should be one of the more simple procedures but my manual doesn't give me any information and a search here hasn't helped. Thanks, ncsurfer

Just went through this myself.  If I remember correctly, there are 3 bolts, plus the adjuster stud with the 2 nuts on it, that need to be loose to move the pump.   I could not get my belt off the pump even though it was a far as possible towards the crankshaft pulley.  I did a little searching on this site, and found that the only way to get the belt off is to cut it off.

Getting the new belt back on simply involves placing the new belt on the crank pulley and around the bottom of the PS pump pulley.  Then you just have to bump the starter over to get the belt to seat on the PS pulley.   Pull your coil wire off while doing this to avoid the engine starting.

Thanks, I am at the same point....couldn't get the belt off. Will cut it off. I found the other bolts by just feeling around for them. I loosened one on the top/back of the mount. Wasn't sure this did any thing, but just have to remember to tighten it when I re-install belts and hoses.

I found a PS belt at my local Autozone.  15mm X 29" worked perfectly.  Book calls for a 13mm width, but the 15mm width fit my pulley just fine.

Cutting the belt is OK if it's worn out but what if it's new? It's possible to remove the belt without cutting it.
Basically, you roll the belt off the same way you roll it on.
