Odd Little Discovery

Greetings...

I was cleaning out the little "well" under the handbrake(280SL) pivot today and noticed that there seems to be a "drainage" hole at the bottom that is open to the ground.  I mean...I can see the garage floor thru it! This is a pretty unmolested car and there wasn't any plug in the hole...is this right?

As a general observation...I had removed the handbrake lever to repaint it. It was interesting to see how relatively crude this piece was, with not so pretty welds, etc.  Were they still "hand building" in 1970?

Thanks Jeff...I guess it's OK.  It just seems a little odd in a car that is otherwise so "buttoned up".  I guess it would be helpful if one was to spill a vente Latte on the floor!

Mine has a rubber plug in the hole.  I think it might be P/N 110 987 00 39.  In my spare parts book that number is listed in several places on the floor pan including "an hand brake covering".

It was given to me by fellow board member, Jim Villers.  It was owned by a Virginia Section MBCA member who passed away.  It is the same book the dealers used to have, before the electronic age.  It is a gold mine of important data.
