Exhaust tip measurement
« on: June 29, 2012, 14:26:05 »
I have a newer stainless exhaust with straight pipes out of the back.  I puchased the Mercedes chrome 7 inch exhaust tips, but looks like I will need to do some cutting to have them fits over the straight pipe as they will be too long.  Anyone have a good measurement on how far they should stick out the back of the car?

Thanks
Chuck

I have a MB exhaust system put on by DB in Germany back in the early 1980s.  They placed the tip ends 25.5 cm from rear plate of rear muffler.  They also are flush with the outer most surface of rear bumper (if you take a carpenter level from pipe tips to bumper).  I am sure the DM mechanic in Germany used the proper specs for this as shown in his MB repair manual.  And yes my system is ready for replacement, and I am at a crossroads to replace with originial MB system or the SS systems.  Understand the sound is a bit different with the SS system.  Any comments as to which is perferred?

Had a stainless on my Triumph TR6 (before I became a Pagoda-lover) and hated it, way too noisy and without the refinement of the mild steel one that I scrapped. But after a few years of carbon build-up it became bearable. Could be a whole different story on a Pagoda though...

When I got my car operational again I replaced the exhaust system with SS. Definitely a different "note" to the exhaust as in LOUDER but I have got used to it now. The original muffler/resonator were replaced three times due to rust out during the car's first 15 years of service (65k miles). My tips extend 8.75" from the centerline of the rear muffler bracket which look good but might be a bit further then original as shown in this picture (taken when the car was a couple of months old)
