Rear Axle Boot Clamps
« on: September 11, 2012, 13:34:55 »
My rear axle just started to leak and I discovered one of the clamps was broken, the one closest to the wheel (outside).  The boot still looks to be in good shape (pliable and not cracked anywhere I can see) so I wanted to replace both clamps.  Does anyone know the size of these clamps?  I understand they are different sizes, inside and out.  I can't find a part number and was thinking of using Norma clamps if I can get the correct size.  Can anyone help with this?  I did a search and lots on the boot but nothing on the clamp sizes.  The clamp kit is apparently no longer available from MB.  Many thanks. Have you spoken with Tom Hanson at the M-B Classic Center in Irving, CA?

I discovered one of the clamps was broken, the one closest to the wheel (outside).

If it is broken, can't you take it off and easily measure it?  Then, you can search for the proper clamp.

Many "foreign" (in the USA) auto parts supply houses carry a selection of Norma, Wurth and Gemi style clamps...

...and a call to Tom Hanson might be worth while.  Last year, I was trying to improve the look of my clamps on the overflow tank, and was trying to find someone who had the proper size.  I found a few, they were not cheap.  Then I called Tom, and the cost of the clamps (at that time) was something like $4 each.  Even Tom had to double check to ensure that was correct.

Needless to say (but I will anyway) I ordered two new ones... ;)

Thanks Michael.  I didn't want to remove the clamps until I had something in hand to replace them, just in case.  They are 2 different sizes.

I did get in touch with Tom at the Classic Center and he once again came through.  Both clamps are in stock, not as part of a kit.  For anyone interested, the part numbers are:
900288-121000
120-995-04-01

$3 and $6 respectively.  Thanks for everyones assistance.

$3 and $6 each.  Not everything is outrageous!  You'd pay more if you found the proper size from one of those links, is my guess.

(hope you got a spare set!)

Yes, I did order a second set as spares.  Arrived yesterday and I'll put them on this weekend.  I had also ordered some Norma clamps and in the event that MB no longer carry them at some point in the future, the Norma 70-90 and the Norma 110-120 clamps would be perfect replacements.  Their width is identical to the MB clamps.  Both the Norma and MB clamps have the edges tapered out so as not to cut into the rubber.
