paint chip repair kits
« on: September 13, 2012, 13:36:08 »
Has anyone tried the chip repair kits available online?  The ones where you "fill" the hole from the chip with the provided paint and then rub it flat so the new paint blends in with the surrounding area?  It looks invisible from the pictures on their sites...but it's marketing, right?

I am looking at fixing that area where the soft top cover gets a rash when driving with the top up.  I also figure I will eventually get a rock on the front as it always end up happening...anyone tried these kits with any luck?  How do you fix your chips?

Thanks,
Jerome

I double cook mine - getting the oil very hot between cooks. They come out nice and crispy that way!

(Oh, THOSE kinds of chips...)
I've not tried this myself: I had someone do some work on my old C class and it came up great. I had someone else do a scratch on my Range Rover and it "burnt" so I now have a patch that's worse than the scratch was. So go carefully.

I tried the product sold by one of The Star advertisers, Dr. Chip, I think. My results were disappointing.

Thankg Gus.

So, what do you do for your paint chips then?  Buy a sample size of the paint, build it up in small layers in the hole until it is flush and buff to blend in?  This is what I am planning on doing, unless someone has a suggestion for something that works well.

Nuts, I was about to try Dr.Paintchip...have lots of little rock chips in the hood, would take forever to dab tiny drops of paint into all of those pits.  Paintchip's wipe-on application sure looks easier.

I tried the DR stuff.  Good news is that paintcolor match was excellent.  That's all the good news.   :'( :'(

My chips were so large on another car that I put in filler - not spot filler but the next step up in terms of "fine structure" and then painted on top, sanded with 2000 grit and then painted again and sanded with 2000 and polished with ultra fine rubbing compound - wife couldn't even tell where I slammed her hood on my trouble light.

I plan on doing the same with my Merc.

I have 30+ chips to attack to hone my skills.
