Door won't open from inside
« on: June 11, 2011, 11:37:06 »
Hi - 1965 230 SL: the RH door won't open from inside - I've removed door panel, and mechanism seems to be working, but pulling door opener all the way doesn't QUITE move the release mechanism far enough. Any tips please - I'm sure it's just worn, but I don't want to damage it by experimenting.

Just to update this - door alignment seems to be fine, opens well with outside handle, but the inner door pull doesn't quite drop the catch far enough to release the door. I've tried playing with the alignment of the other part of the lock (ie on the body pillar)- but no joy. Anyone else had this problem?

Not had this problem (yet) but it looks like you may need to remove the inside door panel.  Not especially difficult, remove all hardware and pull the panel back.  This will give you access to the door hardware and you should be able to determine what the problem is.  Sorry I can't be of any further assistance.

Thanks - have already done this: nothing obviously/visibly wrong - I reckon I'll just have to keep tinkering with alignment of both elements of lock mechanism - on dooor and on body - there must be something worn, bent or misaligned - I just thought someone else might have had same problem - I bet it's something really obvious!

Bizarre.

I am having the same problem on a 230SL.  Observing with the door open, there is no difference in the movement of the latch when the inside handle is pulled vs the outside button pushed.  But with the door shut, when you pull the inside handle, the door stays solidly shut.  You can put your shoulder into it and it won't budge.  You would think that if there was some miniscule difference in movement, that a good shove would open the door.  What am I missing?

FWIW, the lock works fine.
