Chrome Tips for US Made 230 SL Muffler
« on: September 24, 2012, 05:33:55 »
I have a 1965 230 SL and my local MBZ dealership tells me that it has an aftermarket muffler.  I'd like to add the chrome exhaust tips but I'm unsure whether the MBZ tips will fit.  Does anyone have experience with this?  Does anyone know the outside diameter of the OEM muffler tubes?

Thanks!

The MB OEM muffler tubes are 43 MM outside diameter, and the MB OEM chrome tips are 45 mm inside diameter.  Just replaced my entire exhaust system with new MB OEM system.  Tips fit tight over muffler tubes.  Tip ends should line up with outer edge of rear bumper.  They are not to stick out from the bumper.  The MB OEM muffler tubes are cut at the exact measurement.  Chrome tips stick out an additional 15 MM from end of pipes.

Bob,

This is most helpful.  I'll measure my exhaust tubes and see how they compare to this.

Looks like my muffler tubes measure about 45 mm OD.  Would this be too big for MBZ exhaust tips?  If so, can anyone recommend aftermarket exhaust tubes?

I would get the tips anyway and make sure you lug the pipes and tips.  When you hit on the tips, use a rubber hammer and a wooden block.  This should work for you.

Thanks, Bob.

I did order the chrome tips.  Good suggestion on the rubber mallet and wood block.  What did you mean by "lug" the pipes and tips?

Sorry, typo error, I type faster then I think.  Old age setting in I guess.  Should be "lub" with grease for easy on.
