71 280 SEL 4.5 rear end in 67 250 SL ?

Hi guys

I know you have been asked this question a hundred times but here goes.

Will a rear end from a 71 280 SEL fit in a 67 250 SL?  Mine is 3.92 ratio and the donor is 3.2? can't read the last number.  Haven't bought it yet just wanted to know first.

Yes it will fit with minor modifications. There are some previous posts about this. Also the brakes are not the same, they use different pads. It is more or less a bolt-in swap.

 BTW, the 108 rear is a 3,27...

I guess I'd better chime in! That unit is the one you're looking for if you want to drop the rear ratio to a more bearable level. I'd recommend getting it as complete as possible (preferably with traililng arms, etc.) just in case you mangle some bolts getting the old one out. I started my swap back in February, but have been taking my time as I wanted to swap out as many bushings, seals, etc., as I could while the thing was out. Occasionally,. certain bits would take a while to come in.

You'll need to get the speedo recalibrated if you want it to be usable. That'll run you about $150.

How many miles are on your 250?
