correct license plate

Gents,

I am trying to figure out what could have been on my car's original license plate, the stickers, etc.  So far, I am pretty sure it will start with a "K" for Cologne, but I am not sure which registry sticker, inspection/emission sticker, numbers to put down on the plate.

A 1964 230SL first registered 30 September 1964 in Cologne.

Wikipedia is unclear as to which stickers were used when, and if a colored band was used -or not- in 1964, and if so, which color.  As well, do we put 2 plates on cars of this era, or just one in the back?

I'd just like to get a "plausible" license plate(s)  for shows.  Thanks if you can point me in the right direction without too much trouble,

If you don't know the exact plate numbers, anything else would be a bit of a farce.

the old plates have an other font than the new one.

Here is one from 1964, for Cologne is "K" at first than one or two types than chose a number.
The second place is for the logo of "Nordrheinwestfalen"
Like the second pic (downside). The old plates ihas at the backside two logos and at the front only the logo for (Nordrheinwestfalern)

Jerome, For what it is worth, here is a picture of an earlier plate on the front of my Pagoda.  It has a 1988 sticker on it, so this non-colored plate must have been used at least until then.

The colored plates just don't look right on our cars IMHO.

nice picture but wrong! Which one you need? 1988 or 1964?
1964 it was only one sticker at the front, not that on your plate. It was the logo with the horse, this is for registration of the car. At the backside the logo + the one on the old pic from 1964. Look the pic, your plate is for the backside. For Cologne is the Logo with the horse. Every Geman Federal Land has a different Logo.

I always wanted a German license plate for the front of my fintail, and one appeared on the local Craigslist.  Looked authentic enough.  So I bought it and stuck it on the car without a lot of thought.  Then I started wondering if it was period correct for the car and looked for some information.

It turns out that that the oval plates are actually "export" plates circa 1948-1988.  So I guess these are good for my US fintail which was picked up at the factory by the orginal owner and shipped to the US about a month later.  These would sort of authentic for any US or non-German car.

The non-export period plates would be pre-EU, without the country sticker on the left, as opposed to the post-EU plates.  I htink that these could be good for German-registered cars.  See pictures.

There all are sorts of these plates on eBay for $5 to $20.
