crankshaft seal & spacer/racer removal and new installation
« on: December 24, 2012, 05:07:39 »
Hi
I'm in process to remove & replace the crankshaft seal and spacer/racer on my 66 230sl. I have a few questions for you.

1) my exisiting crankshaft seal is black and has a lip on the top half. (pic#1). My new replacement seal is brown without the lip (Pic#2 with all tool ready to start). What is correct seal for my engine?

2) What is the correct order to install the spacer & seal. I learnt on Pagodentreff.de, the German W113 forum, that the seal goes on first with some sealant on the outside and grease on the inner ring. then install the spacer/racer with some sealant inside and grease outside. Is this what you would recommend as well?

3) Any trouble to get the spacer installed. I thought to use the a PVC ring 1 1/2in dia., cut to the current length of the crankshaft end and the spacer. I would then use the crankshaft bolt and the three "spring washers" and use that to move the spacer to correct position

I hope the PVC spacer removal tool (pic#2) with the two hose clamps will work. Any trick to know ahead of time to do this right?

Your thought?

Happy Holidays

Gerhard
