Key duplication - caution advised!

Anticipating using the SL more now that it has a rear axle again, I went to my normally-trustworthy locksmith and had two ignition blanks I'd found on eBay ruined. He cut them exactly the same on both sides. I'm sure I'll get the $2.50 I spent there back, but I'm out the $30 or so I paid for the blanks. Make sure your key guy knows to flip the original when he flips the blank!

Anyone know what it costs to get duplicate keys from MB?

John like you I also puchased a key blank on ebay. It did not match :evil: I haven't tried MB yet. It's always nice to have a few spare keys .

My blanks, which came from Pagoda group member Ernie Burchall, matched my original perfectly (and, I must add, Ernie had gone out of his way to replace one that had been lost by USPS). It was all the key cutter's fault.

I have always found it quite easy to obtain blank keys for reproduction at various older locksmith shops.  They usually have several of each hanging on the racks that are identical matches to the original keys.

I had a couple of keys made by MB in Australia. It cost me US$30.00. As I could not wait for 6 weeks for the genuine MB keys from Germany the MB used Italian-made blanks. I had the keys within 30 minutes--and they worked perfectly.

One of my blanks was Italian and certainly looked good before it was ruined. I guess I'll order some originals in addition to the ersatz jobs, since the one key I have is a duplicate and getting a couple from MB that are nice and clean would be a plus.

Hi, I got a price from MB the other week £12:00 for
the key and £15:00 Gbp for the cutting oh and you
need all docs for the car.
