I am in a bit of a dilemma trying to resolve the original upholstery in my 1966 230SL. The data card for this vehicle shows a code in Box 17 as “230 1”. (The “1” is in Box 17 but separated from the “230” by a vertical line. Above the “1” there is a small number “40” that is part of the Data Card itself.)
According to the Tech Manual Upholstery Codes, the “230” represents “Egg Shell” and the “1” represents MB Tex. The issue is that the “230” upholstery code in the Tech Manual is for leather. Vinyl codes for the 230SL range only from 112-124.
I contacted The Classic Center in Irvine and they sent me a scanned Data Card for this car, with a legend indicating the various codes. Their codes show “230” as Egg Shell leather.
This agrees with the upholstery codes in the Tech Manual but not with the Data Card legend there (due to the discrepancy between leather and vinyl). It sure looks as though the Tech Manual is wrong in this area.
Is there anyone else who has had this or similar experience?
Thanks,
Harry
