Tech Manual Data Card Discrepancy
« on: January 18, 2013, 23:03:00 »
I am in a bit of a dilemma trying to resolve the original upholstery in my 1966 230SL.  The data card for this vehicle shows a code in Box 17 as “230 1”.  (The “1” is in Box 17 but separated from the “230” by a vertical line.  Above the “1” there is a small number “40” that is part of the Data Card itself.)

According to the Tech Manual Upholstery Codes, the “230” represents “Egg Shell” and the “1” represents MB Tex.  The issue is that the “230” upholstery code in the Tech Manual is for leather.  Vinyl codes for the 230SL range only from 112-124.

I contacted The Classic Center in Irvine and they sent me a scanned Data Card for this car, with a legend indicating the various codes.  Their codes show “230” as Egg Shell leather.

This agrees with the upholstery codes in the Tech Manual but not with the Data Card legend there (due to the discrepancy between leather and vinyl).  It sure looks as though the Tech Manual is wrong in this area.

Is there anyone else who has had this or similar experience?

Thanks,
Harry

The "2" in "230" indicates leather. 230 is a leather code.
The 1 next to it has the "40" above it, indicating "401", which is "single seats" as opposed to bench seats.

My error - thanks very much!  After your post, I re-read that area in the Tech Manual and I clearly misunderstood earlier.

The does actually have the original Egg Shell leather everywhere except the seats, which at some point not long before I bought it were recoverd in vinyl.  I gather the vinyl is Parchment in color.  So the owner at that point applied a leather paint to all of the leather to match the vinyl.  I am going to redo the interior with leather but I don't see Egg Shell offered anywhere.  And the Parchment color appears (in the photos) to have quite a bit of grey - which I don't want.

If I can't find the Egg Shell and have to change the interior color anyway, I may go with the red (on the Ivory car).  Not sure yet.

Hi Harry,

If you do end up doing it in red interior could you post images? I'm contemplating on the same color combination.

Thanks
