Heater questions

Im working on a 69 280sl. all doors seem to be opening and closing as they should with the apropriate levers. but for some reason the air never changes it stays on the front vents and never gets hot sitting at an idle. I have been searching the internet for a couple hours trying to find any diagrams about the function of the hvac housing with little sucess. If anyone can give me any advice it would be much appriciated. I am a mechanic just very unfamiliar with older foreign vehicles and cant find any info on the vehicle.

The lower two levers control the heat, they should both be pushed to the outside.  The upper levers control air to the dash and the feet and open and close the vents at the sides.  Is the blower working?  If there is no heat the heater control valve may be stuck closed preventing flow through the heater core or there may be a blockage in the heater core.  Hopefully it is the valve, it can be accessed at the top of the firewall on the drivers side under the rubber cover.  It is described here http://www.sl113.org/wiki/Electrical/HeaterControlValve.  If it is the heater core that is a whole other kettle of fish.  There is a lot written here about removal of the heater core, just do a search on this site.  Good luck and let us know how you make out.  If I am addressing the wrong issue just bump this post and someone will get to it.

Hello,


First check to see if  the heater water valve is functioning. The valve movement itself can be viewed by removing the 2" diameter flat rubber grommet on the firewall under the hood (upper left). Move the left lower red lever from side to side to see if you can see the water valve move. Max heat is with the lever switched left-most to the red arrow
 The Blue lever (air volume control lever, upper left) moves the air intake flap in the hooded cover in front of the windshield and controls the volume of air coming into the car.Watch to make sure that the flap in the hooded cover moves up and down when this lever (blue) is moved.  Left-most is max air flow. The grey lever (air distribution lever) directs air flow to the defrost ducting or the foot space ducting or a combination of both depending on the position of the lever. The red lever on the left is the main heat control.  It moves  the water valve and the amount of hot coolant entering or not entering  the heater core. This lower left red heater lever also regulates the amount of hot air entering the left half of the car. The right side heater valve regulates the amount of hot air entering the right side of the car.  

Max heat would have the blue lever left-most on the blue arrow, both red levers on their respective red arrows. The grey lever would be set to direct the heated air to the windscreen or foot areas as desired.  The heater fan speed control (just right of the levers) would be adjusted to the desired fan speed.

Max ventilation would be blue lever left-most on the blue arrow, both red levers moved all the way away  from their respective red arrows. and the grey lever is set to direct the ventilation to the foot or windshied areas. With this setting the fan switch can be  used to increase ventilation air flow.

The AC system and the heater systems are mostly independent of each other on these cars. Note the separate controls for fan and temp on the heater unit.

i think my problem is trying to find out how the blower gets air to the heater core it looks to me like the blower motor in the passenger kick panel is completely seperate from the box with the heater core I cannot get any air to move through the heater core at all i can put my hand on the heater core and it is getting hot just no air flow and i cannot find anything on the web for what is suposed to deliver the air through the heater core!

You have two blowers on your car. One for the AC, the other is buried in the dash and is for the heater.
