Steering Column Removal
« on: February 05, 2013, 17:12:50 »
1966 230SL Automatic.  I see on the forum where the ignition switch is held by a clamp on the column, and a spring loaded pin.  Is the pin apparent and accessible?  Better yet, do I need to remove the ignition switch to pull the steering column?  There doesn't appear to be any clearance for moving the column townds the firewall sufficient enough so that a still installed ignitio switch would clear the panel opening.

Thanks!

I think there's a strap under the column that you will need to remove first. Also, you should remove all of the gauges so you can have room to work.

The ignition switch can be replaced without removing the steering column. If you are removing the steering column, you should  remove the ignition switch before removing the column.  As Dan says, the instruments should be removed first. When you  have the speedo out you will see a small clamp around the shaft of the steering lock assembly Loosen the 10mm bolt on the  clamp and move it as needed until you see the lock "pin" protruding through the metal collar.  Turn the ignition key to position #1  and the pin can be depressed and the ignition lock assembly can be turned or removed when ready.  Note for later W113s the chrome ring can be removed when the ignition key is in #1 position, not the case with a 230SL.
Next you will see two nuts which secure the "U" strap around the steering column. Remove those and the strap. In addition there are one or two more hex bolts which secure the top end of the steering column and ignition in place. Remove these. One may be on the top and another under the dash. ?  At this point the column will be somewhat movable at the top end and you should have enough clearance to remove the ignition assembly after unfastening the wires or wire switching unit.

To disconnect the steering column at the bottom the floor plate and  the 6mm bolts on the steering shaft coupling must be removed (bottom end).

Thanks very much.  The gages are out and the column free at the steering box so I'm close!

Another question - is there a kit for replacing the seals on the steering box?  Mine looks like it is leaking on top (near the nut). I haven't searched this yet.

Well - I removed the 10mm bolt but it looks like the "clamp" on this column is integral to the column, ie. the clamp doesn't rotate.  Also, the ignition switch is still protruding through the dash hole by 1/2" or so.  So it isn't going to rotate in that position.  And, the switch housing behind the dash is almost against the stiffener between the speedo opening and the heater controls, restricting it from being pulled out of the column at this point.  I've got it wrong somehow, huh?  You may have to "break it down" a little further for me.  BTW - all instruments are removed so access is as good as it will get.

Thanks again,
Harry

Harry,

You will need to reach around through the speedo hole and loosen the bolt that clamps the ignition assembly to the steering column. This is very difficult to see and you will have to do it by feel. Once this is loosened the igntion assembly should rotate as you lower the steering column.

Did you loosen the strap that holds the column in place?

Haven't had a chance to go any further at this point (out of town).  Should be back on the fun stuff soon.  I'm anxious to get back to it and put this great advice to work.  The help is really appreciated!
