Correct position for the wing mirror

Sounds silly even to myself. My wing mirror is placed on the extreme edge of the wing closest to the windscreen and door. I see most are positioned on the door. Is there a right and wrong on this or did it depend upon the dealer/importer of the time?

On the Pagodas I've only seen them on the doors.

I thought they were only on the doors ... until I saw this very early pagoda that has the mirror on the fender/wing ...  don't think it is correct ... but not sure ... several members should be able to advise on correctness ...

Mirror is mounted in wrong place for sure.  My European spec has early mirror mounted on door.

I talked to someone at the last PUB who had a swan neck mirror on the passenger side door of their 230. He said it was there for symmetry and looks in that the windshield pillar blocked the mirror and rendered it useless. Maybe that is why it was mounted so far forward?

I will have to disagree with 71 Baige.  I have no trouble viewing my swan neck mirror mounted on the door.  But I think you are correct, some past owner of that SL remounted the mirror for better viewing.  Many of the "sports cars" of that 60s era had fender mounted mirrors.  Seeing the mirror mounted on the wing, just doesn't look design correct.

Here is another slant to this.  My drivers is fine as it came out of the factory but a new one fitted to the passenger side, in exactly the same position as the drivers mirror, is not correct and should have been fitted an extra inch back from the front of the door as you cannot see to the rear correctly as it is blocked by the A or windscreen pillar from the drivers seat.

The 230 owners of the Group would know better than I. I own a 280 which at this point has no passenger mirror. However, I did buy a passenger mirror and plan to have it installed this spring. It is not the swan neck but the later style. I will certainly test the position before the body shop drills the holes in my precious Pagoda!

The 280SL with the different neck does not have the same problem.  When I fitted one to my old 280 I fitted it in the same position as the drivers one. It worked just fine.  When it was done with the swan mirror on the 230SL, it did not work.

I mounted a passenger side mirror on my 230SL in exactly the same location on the door as that on the drivers side.  I sit back pretty far when I drive so about 2/3s of the mirror is visible from where I sit so it works for me.  Keep in mind there is a reinforcing plate on the inside of the door for the mirror (yes also on passengers side) so you should probably try and stay within that when you mount it.

By the way, I have always liked the torpedo mirrors mounted on the wing on the old jags, etc. Great look but, not on a Pagoda.
