Can the rear backing plate on a 280SL be removed without taking the rotor off?

I am pretty sure you have to remove not only the rotor, but the axle shaft itself.

If you can wait a few days and no one else pipes up, I'll let you know! (About to go there in reverse).

If you do have to remove the half shaft it's not hard. Do a search here for Joe A's technique involving a length of angle iron,  two bolts and a hammer works a treat in seconds. No puller required.
