small switch under the dash
« on: April 28, 2013, 09:38:14 »
There's a small red switch hanging under the dashboard of my car. I can't figure out what it's for. Is it on the wiring diagram, and I'm just not recognizing it? Is it an obvious non-original addition? Any ideas?

I haven't tried to follow the wires in detail. It's mighty congested up there and I don't know how you guys get your hands and eyes in behind the dashboard.

That does not look original... so you'll have to trace the wires... because the switch is so small, it cannot be a high current item (like driving lamps) unless it is driving a relay (check under the hood if you have a non-original relay somewhere). Could it be from an alarm system or immobilizer?

I have seen a similar switch which turned out to operate the power antenna so if
using an ipod you can lower the antenna. I understand that front fender mounted
antennas create a lot of wind noise which can be annoying when the roof is down.
Obviously not a standard fit.

How about a cold start device to turn the cold start valve on?
Is it a momentary switch that springs back after you release it or does it toggle and stay where you moved it to?

It's a toggle. I haven't done a thorough check of whether the behaviour of other systems depends on which position this switch is in. It's on my list of things to do.
