Has anyone come up with a good fix for 280SL overheating problem? I have a new fan, recored oversize radiator, and new antifreeze and I am still heating up when I set at a traffic light.

There are numerous discussions on this common issue; run a search and let us know what you find. Typical causes are restricted passages in the engine, trapped air in the system causing blockage, or a faulty thermostat. Main thing is that these cars can run normal, ie do not have to overheat and have this issue (which you are right in addressing due to the potential damage to the head).

What do you call "heating up"?  How high does the gauge go?

What is your coolant mix?

I had a 230 recently that was o/heating. We had the radiator re-cored to no-effect. We had the radiator re-cored again with a larger tube core. No effect. We installed a second hand radiator from another car; problem solved. Go figure!
