Carpet fitting for RHD manual gearshift pagodas.
« on: July 03, 2013, 03:01:43 »
Has anyone bought a complete new RHD kit that need absolutely no modifications?  The word down here is that it is best to have the front mats left as uncut and have them cut and bound by a local upholsterer which adds another $200 or so.  I have seen a new carpet set, (Tops and Interiors) recently that did not match where the drivers carpet runs up under the steering wheel etc. I asked World Upholstery to just leave the ends on these two pieces unbound but they do not want to do this preferring to send oversize pieces for finishing here.  Would rather pay more and have it dead right from the start.

Rutger,

I ordered and fitted a correct RHD carpet set complete for my 230SL with Kinda seat, and it came with all pieces pre cut and stitched and it fitted just fine in the car.

It came from KHM and I am very happy with it.

Rutger,

I`ll second Gary`s recommendation re KHM - I ordered a set earlier this year from them and had an upholsterer fit it - he was impressed with the quality of the binding and the fit. The only thing he used was glue - didn`t have to cut anything. They even put an off cut in the box, so when all the pieces were fitted, there was a piece left over to be used to match any subsequent order

Hi Guys, thanks for that, i saw Gary's carpet in Canberra albeit square weave  and liked it.  It is two tone multiloop for me (1969 280SL).  I am going for Dark Brown as that is what my car came out with. Have got a price from KHM and it looks good.

Rutger,

You won`t be disappointed. When the box of bits first arrived I was checking out the various pieces and thought they had made a mistake - the hole for the gear stick in the transmission tunnel was off set to the left by about an 3cm - grrrr - until I looked at the tunnel and sure enough the gear stick isn`t in the centre of the tunnel - I have never noticed it before and my old carpet set (which wasn`t original)  didn`t have the offset.

Just one last query, I have asked KHM to change the colour of the rubber wear pad, in the drivers mat from brown to black ($40 euro extra).  I have an idea there is another rubber wear strip up the outside side of this mat, is this correct for a 280SL?  My existing carpet is not an original so I can't tell from it.
