Proper fluid levels
« on: July 09, 2013, 21:13:52 »
I searched the site for "fluid levels", and got a lot of advice to check the fluid levels. But what are the the proper levels, for instance, how much coolest should be in the tank when cold. (230)
Thanks.

There should be a small tang sticking out inside the collant tank - fill it so that the coolant just thouches the end of it. I usually fill the 280SL style tank about half to 2/3 full. IN either case, you need a certain amount of head room above the coolant level to take up exspansion of the coolant.

The auto trans is pretty clear how full it should be. Note that if the fluid level is at the add mark it only takes about 250 - 350 ml to fill it to the full mark. Don't add a litre or it will be over filled.
Standard trans - I fill it until it starts to run out.
Rear axle - if axles are hanging down I use my little finger to feel for any lube. As long as I can touch it, it's full enough.
If the axles are level then I like it just below the fill hole. Clean the axle vent or expect a lot of oil seepage.
