Drivers Side Under dash Panel
« on: September 29, 2013, 21:00:49 »
Can someone post a picture of their under dash panel showing where they are screwed or fastened in place, particularly at the back above the pedals.  I have it secured at the front (just below the steering wheel) but do not know where they are secured at the back.  I can't find any holes.  My panel keeps dropping down and getting in the way of my feet.  >:(  I have a manual late 230SL in case they changed at some point.  Many thanks for any assistance.

This is my repaired RHD panel, you can see the screws,  it may help ?

I found it very difficult to reattach the lower (footwell) screws and panel, so eventually slotted the holes in the panel, screwed in the screws to the bulkhead, and then slid the panel over the screws.

Hope this is of some help

Thanks Paul, I will have a look at those locations.  Does anyone have a picture of the panel actually installed.  I know I have pushed up on it so the two screw locations shown in Pauls photo could be along a long line.  I also have a manual and don't know if that makes a difference.

OK, here is a picture of my under dash panel.  As you can see it is a PITA when shifting.  Maybe I have the wrong panel?  If not where do I pin it down?
Thanks.

From my memory, you are a little off.  the big tab goes above the collumn, the bent lip at the firewall goes much higher.  It is maybe 4 or 5 inches too low?  The tab between the pedals goes way up between them, a few inches higher  higher.  seems to me that lip is what kept it up.  I took mine off so much I gave up and just never put it back.  Maybe it rested on the firewall padding and the tab above the collumn?

Here is the attached panel, bear in mind mine is a RHD car though.

The speakers were originally fitted by a previous owner, as was the fuel pump isolation switch - hence the panel was falling apart and I had to remove for rebuilding.
I replaced the speakers at the same time, and also added two more behind the seat backs, so now I have very good sound with the RetroSound radio.

Hope this helps you a bit Jordan.

Keep well

Thanks Gary and Paul.  Can anyone with LHD manual shift confirm that my panel is too low, or better yet, a picture of a LHD with manual shift so I can see exactly how the panel is suppose to sit around the steering column.

Marcus, this is news to me. I don't think I have an underdash panel at all! So there's another item on my list, for when I get my interior done.

You are missing the firewall pad too.

I just took this picture.  My car is an automatic but the panel should be similar.  I'm not sure if the mat should be in front of the panel or behind it.  The passenger side mat was behind the panel when I got the car.  Notice the panel screws have the original washers.  You can see them better on the passenger side.  I replaced both mats because the drivers side mat was messed up but they are in the position they were when I bought the car...

Thanks Brad for the picture.  Your panel looks different than mine, perhaps because you have an automatic.  I'll see if I can locate the appropriate hole(s) this week.  Both your and Pauls picture show it being just above the steering column.
