American Vacation

Hi Guys,

we're flying over to the US on wednesday and will be traveling around the New York / Boston / Long Island area for about two weeks. We've been there for a couple of times, but never made any Car / Pagoda / or Oldtimer related trips. Any suggestions what to visit in this area? Are there any Concours / gatherings or whatever? Or anything else interesting to visit (except the usual suspects)! Thanks for any advice!

Regards,
Fritz

Fritz,

New York up the Hudson River Valley is quite scenic as is heading east towards the Hamptons (South Fork) or Winery Region (North Fork) of Long Island. Traveling from NY to Boston along the Connecticut shore can be especially nice this time of year. If you decide on that trip I would suggest a stop-over in Newport, Rhode Island and tour the summer "cottages" of the Rockefellers and Vanderbilt's from the Guilded Age. This is also the 60th year of the Newport Jazz Festival.

This stated, you have included a wide area to cover. Once you narrow down your direction, repost here or send me a PM if you'd like.

Fritz,

I know of a place called Aventura Motors on Long Island where there are always some Pagodas either for sale or maintenance, along with many other cars. Very picturesque region as well, so you may want to have a stop and look while visiting around.

Some people who bought a car there call it Adventure Motors, but so are people... ;)

Car shows taper off a bit during July and August...many people are away and it gets quite hot.

There's a Vintage Car show at Long Beach LI on 11 August

A small classic car show in Sayville LI on 4 August

Show and swap meet at Greenlawn LI on 10 August (Saturday)

These are "local" shows featuring mostly American metal with very few non-US cars.

As mentioned above, the Hudson Valley north of NYC is very nice as is the North Shore of Long Island with old estates, mansions, and more.

Too bad you did not fly into Detroit, MI this past weekend you would have been able to attend the Concourse de' Elegance at the St Johns Inn in near by Plymouth, MI. It was a great event.

Check out the thread on this forum in the Event's area. Some photos there etc.

You can always visit...

I've used it mostly to annoy my kids when we went on vacation.

HI Moss, I'm sorry you chose such an unattractive part of the US to visit but I assume this was business related?  You do know that NYC to Boston is about the same distance as Cologne to Stuttgart?  I know that this may not apply to you, but I find that my European friends have no concept of how spread out we are here.  For instance, I live on the east coast also but Boston is 2000 kms from me.  If you have the opportunity to visit the south I'd be happy to offer some suggestions of places to see.

Fritz:

Hope you know that Gerry's mention of such an "unattractive part of the US" referring to the NY to Boston area is a bit of a jest on his part...probably motivated by jealousy since he lives in Florida, an out of the way backwater barely hanging on to the US mainland :0)

You're coming to one of the nicest areas, rich in history and visual geography...and even our Florida friends will admit, the American dream stated on the east coast.

P.S. Actually, the USA is a big country with many wonderful places to visit including Florida.

In mid-November for 3 weeks we fly to Florida every year.
We stay in Cape Coral and in all the years I had not been in contact with "pagoda Drivers". Would be nice.

Peter:  I woul suggest you contact the Southwest Florida Section of MBCA.  There are any numbers of Pagodas that belong and I am certain you could meet some owners for breakfast or lunch.  Go to www.mbca.org and find the Southwest Florida section for contact information.

I may have moved my Pagoda down there form Ohio for this up coming winter and would be happy to meet with you, if I have it there , although It may be later in December before I move it there.

The Southwest Florida Section regularly schedules breakfast meetings once a month in Fort Myers and in Naples.

Rolf, If you visit Peter, you must have some of the fine Mosel Riesling from the vineyards surrounding Enkirch.

Hallo Rolf Dieter
Du bist herzlich Willkommen und nicht nur auf einen Kaffee. Habe gesehen du bist jetzt auch im Pagodentreff.

Hello John

The Mosel Riesling is already something good. Hope you can find their way again to Mosel and stay a little longer

Hallo Peter,

I'll keep it in mind, next time I'm back home again! Do enjoy the rest of your US vacation. The weather should be nice this time of year in Florida. Yes I did join the Germman Pagoda site, it gives me a no pertinently to practice my German writing :)
