Flywheel, 4-spd vs. 5-spd

Does anyone out there know if a 5-spd ZF from a 230SL will mate up to the flywheel on a 4-spd manual equipped 280SL?

Sort of. The input shaft is basically the same on both trans but the flywheels are different. I'd use the 280 flywheel with that engine and the 230 with that engine - you can't mix them up anyway. I think the throw out bearing could be different as well as the throw out fork. The 5 speed is something you have to custom fit according to how your car is set up.

The 5 speed trans will fit either car but the drive shaft is different as well as the shift linkage. You could change the linkage by cutting it shorter and then welding it back up if you didn't have any.
You need to get all these parts to change over to the 5 speed, trans.,bell housing,shifter tube, stabilizer rods and probably drive shaft although one from an auto trans car may be the right length.
